HOW TO KEEP LETTUCE FRESH FOR A WHOLE WEEK LONGER WITH SAVVY FIVE MINUTE STORAGE HACK

Storing lettuce and other leafy greens in the fridge after purchase may seem like a no-brainer, but there's a simple trick to keep salads fresher for much longer, according to a food expert.

Kristin Marr, a culinary guru and founder of Live Simply, has pointed out that lettuce is one of the most "notorious" veggies for spoiling too quickly due to its delicate nature and specific moisture needs.

She explained: "Greens need some moisture, but too much moisture is the enemy and will cause the greens to rot prematurely. This is why you don't want to wash delicate greens in advance, only when you need them."

Lettuce also requires airflow, which is why it often spoils quickly as excessive moisture can accumulate in its plastic packaging, while the dry environment of the fridge can cause it to wilt.

However, Kristin has shared an "easy" food storage method that takes just five minutes but can help keep lettuce, kale, and spinach fresh for an additional week or even longer.

How to keep lettuce and other leafy greens fresh for weeks

One of the most effective ways to keep lettuce fresh is to ensure your leafy greens are not exposed to too much moisture, and this can be achieved with a ziplock bag and some kitchen paper towels.

Simply separate the leaves from a head of lettuce, place the leaves in a ziplock bag along with some paper towels, seal the bag and pop it in the fridge.

Kristin told the Express: "The towel will soak up extra moisture, keeping the greens from getting too wet which causes premature rotting and slimy greens."

She also noted that it's important not to pack the bag too tightly as lettuce requires airflow to stay fresh. With this method, your greens could last for a week or sometimes even longer.
