GORDON RAMSAY'S COOKING METHOD TO MAKE RICE ‘PERFECTLY' SHOWS WE HAVE BEEN MAKING IT WRONG

There is nothing worse than cooking a delicious curry only for the rice to become mushy, clumpy or even burned, but luckily there is a simple way to solve this problem.

Gordon Ramsay has shared his cooking method for making rice "perfectly" so it comes out "light, fluffy and delicious" every time you make it.

In a video online, Gordon walked through the simple steps to make rice, and also pointed out some common mistakes may people make and how to easily avoid them.

How to cook the perfect rice

Always wash the rice

To begin, the celebrity chef started with 400g of basmati rice and explained that rice should always be washed under a cold water tap before you begin cooking.

He said: "What I'm gonna do is just rinse off the dust and the starch, [use] cold water always and just rinse the rice to stop it from becoming clumpy in the pan."

The excess starch in white rice is what causes it to become clumpy or stick to the pan and burn.

Rinsing the rice with water will help make it fluffy and light, but you can also add a little oil or butter to your cooking pan to further prevent the rice from burning.

Season your rice before cooking to give it a flavour boost

Next, Gordon placed the rice in a cooking pan and seasoned with a little salt and pepper, then suggested some other spices to make the rice even more delicious

Gordon said: "To make a plain fluffy rice exciting, we're going to infuse it [with] three cardamom pods. Just get the pods and just pierce them so it allows all that flavour to come out.

"Then stat anise, these are beautiful...it makes the rice really nice and fragrant."

However, seasoning the rice is based on personal preference and Gordon added that this cooking method will work without spices if you prefer.

Make sure to use the correct measurements

One of the most common mistakes people make is undercooking their rice which makes it bland and hard, but this issue is caused by people not knowing how much water to cook the rice in.

According to Gordon, the correct for cooking rice ratio is "one part rice to one and a half part water" and he used 600ml of water for his 400g of rice.

Not using the correct measurements of the rice and water leads to mushy rice. And you can always check the packet instructions if you are unsure of the measurements.

Always keep an eye on the temperature

Another major mistake many people make is leaving the pan of rice to simmer at the same temperature while it is cooking, but you should bring it to a boil as soon as the rice is on the stove.

Gordon explained: "Always start off with cold water. Then bring it up to the boil as quick as possible, then let it simmer for 8-10 minutes.

"That's the secret to cooking great rice - allow it to steam as it's cooking. Do not lift the lid up."

Not bringing the rice to a boil can lead to undercooked or unevenly cooked rice. You can also the rice to rest for a further 10 minutes to allow the heat to restructure and make sure it it cooked evenly and properly.

Finally, make sure to fluff the rice

Once the rice is cooked it can be tempting to serve it straight away, but run a fork through it to make sure it is fluffy and light. This step also prevents the rice from clumping and allows it to release excess moisture to stop the rice from becoming mushy.

Gordon said: "Once you've forked it through it becomes really nice, light and fluffy, and then, that is perfectly cooked rice."
