CHEF SAYS WE'RE ALL MAKING SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE WRONG - CORRECT WAY IS MORE 'AUTHENTIC'

Spaghetti bolognese is a staple dish in many British homes - but it turns out we've not been eating authentic versions.

No, spaghetti bolognese isn't exactly a British dish. But it's the next best thing, given it's a classic tea in British homes across the whole country.

Many Brits claim their mum makes the best one - but before you go bragging to an Italian, you might want to keep reading. Chef Sophie Nahmad, from recipe box service Gousto, claims we've all been doing it wrong.

According to the chef, there's a big mistake Brits make which is a big no no - we're using spaghetti. Sophie says the most authentic pasta shape is tagliatelle, which is what Italians traditionally use because it's wider, flatter and allows for the meat in the bolognese to cling to it more easily.

Sophie explained: "Fresh Tagliatelle is delicious and oh so satisfying to twirl onto your fork when you're tucking into your dinner. Due to the wider shape, it's a great pasta to pair with a thick, meat-based sauce. In fact, Italians traditionally pair tagliatelle with bolognese sauce instead of spaghetti!"

"Any meat-based ragu-style sauce will pair well with this type of pasta, such as this spicy sausage and creamy tomato sauce recipe, so maybe it's time to switch up your dinner time traditions and try something new. It might turn into a fresh staple that the whole family will love. Tag Bol, anyone?"

So when you next go shopping for your spag bol supplies, you might want to opt for tagliatelle instead, as spaghetti, with its slender, cylindrical shape and smooth surface, isn't ideal for holding onto the sauce. And Sophie isn't alone about advocating for the pasta swap.

Chef Antonio Carluccio, a renowned authority on Italian cuisine, famously said that "bolognese sauce should never be served with spaghetti. It should be with tagliatelle". If you do fancy a spaghetti meal, Sophie recommends making a pesto or, any other sauce that's not tomato-based.

Sophie added to Daily Record: "While many of you might have just learned you've been using it wrong your entire lives, it wouldn't be a pasta round up without a mention of Spaghetti. This is the nation's second favourite pasta shape after Fusilli, and a staple you'll find in most UK kitchens. When it comes to any long noodle pasta shape, including varieties such as Linguini or Capellini, it's best to stick to lighter sauces. A simple pesto or arrabbiata sauce are the best choices for these shapes."
